Trimline delivered a major transformation project aboard Utopia of the Seas—the enlargement of the Smokeless Casino—while the ship was fully operational and carrying passengers.
Unlike typical refits of this scale, which are executed in drydock under controlled conditions, this project was undertaken entirely “on the run,” requiring exceptional care, coordination, and minimal disruption to the guest experience. Impressively, despite the scale and complexity of structural alterations, the project was delivered with zero customer complaints, a testament to Trimline’s precise planning and onboard execution standards.
Project Delivery
The project was delivered in three distinct phases:
- Phase 1: Conversion of the Social 100 Lounge into a new Crown Lounge with new pantry.
- Phase 2: Transformation of The Attic into the main Smokeless Casino.
- Phase 3: Integration of the old Crown Lounge and Smokeless Casino into one unified guest area.
This multi-phase undertaking required structural modifications including the removal and replacement of bulkheads, ceilings, and flooring, along with extensive new build elements: reception desks, buffet areas, gaming stations, lighting, AV systems, HVAC adjustments, and specialist decorative finishes.
Structural Modifications: Included the removal of A60 bulkhead, a new pantry, and installation of new insulated bulkhead systems with B15 fire ratings.
Electrical and Data Integration: Over £600K of lighting, AV, and power distribution works were carried out, including installation of over 475 spotlights, custom dimming zones, new CCTV, and power/data for more than 200 gaming machines and tables.
Interior Finishes: Custom-built furniture, wall panelling, fretwork panels, column casings, new ceilings, and flooring were installed across multiple venues. Owner-supplied elements such as slot machines and carpets were precisely integrated to match Royal Caribbean’s design vision.
Fire Safety & HVAC: Modifications were made to sprinkler and safety systems across multiple decks, requiring careful coordination with onboard fire zones and systems.
Guest-Centric Delivery
Working “live” on a vessel with a project of this scale necessitated meticulous daily planning to minimize guest disruption. Dust-proof hoardings, noise-control measures, and off-peak working hours were implemented to maintain a seamless passenger experience. Trimline accounted for non-productive time due to the Jones Act and potential weather-related restrictions, demonstrating their proactive risk management and responsiveness.
Conclusion
This complex project aboard Utopia of the Seas demonstrates Trimline’s unmatched ability to deliver high-impact marine interior transformations—even in the most demanding of environments. Undertaking substantial structural and cosmetic refurbishments without impacting guests, and maintaining Royal Caribbean’s premium onboard standards, underscores Trimline’s expertise, flexibility, and client commitment.
